iPhone Developer Track at AJAXWorld Offers Unique Lineup

"It's likely that the speed of the iPhone's rise to competitive dominance in its segment is unprecedented in the history of the mobile-handset market," said a report by research group iSuppli yesterday, as it was revealed that Apple's iPhone outsold every other type of smartphone in the United States in July.

For a phone in its very first full month on sale, that is pretty good going. The online consumer survey by iSuppli involved 2 million participants in the United States.

Not even RIM's best-selling BlackBerry could beat out the iPhone, nor the entire Palm range. Motorola, Nokia, Samsung - none of the giants could match the Cupertino, CA-based company's performance right out of the gate.

iSuppli further predicted that Apple sales of iPhone may reach 4.5M by the end of the year.

Dojo on the iPhone
- Dylan Schiemann

Apple's iPhone is the latest consumer electronics and technology sensation, sparking not only what should be significant worldwide demand, but also representing a potential new world to conquer for developers. How can developers leverage the Dojo Toolkit for this latest innovation from Cupertino?

Speaker Bio: Dylan Schiemann is CEO, SitePen, and co-creator of the Dojo Toolkit. It all started in 1999 when Dylan dropped out of the PhD program at UCLA and left the fascinating world of statistics of shear-induced rearrangements in a two-dimensional model foam and the accumulation of glucosaminyl(acyl)phosphatidylinositol in an S3 HeLa subline expressing normal dolicholphosphomannose synthase activity to refocus his efforts on the future of the Web. As CEO of SitePen and co-founder of the Dojo Toolkit, Dylan is best known for building Web applications that make use of JavaScript/AJAX, Dojo, and other standard Web development technologies. He has helped develop Web apps for companies including Renkoo, Informatica, Security FrameWorks, and Vizional Technologies.

Building the iPhone with Adobe AIR - Joe Johnson

A study of the iPhone UI and rebuilding it in AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime) using Adobe Flex 3. AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime) is a cross-operating system runtime that allows developers to use their existing web development skills to build and deploy Rich Internet Applications to the desktop. With the WebControl component in AIR which is powered by WebKit it will allow you to build and test iPhone Applications. Also, I will be showing a component that will give the ability to make and receive calls, record/send and receive voicemail, as well as add and manage contacts.

Speaker Bio: Flex developer, information architect, roller hockey goaltender. Joe has worked with Flash and other interactive tools for over ten years, starting his career at Crowe/Horwath.

Building an iPhone Application in 24 Hours: Behind-the-Scenes with Laszlo Systems - Bret Simister & Ben Shine

Apple’s official announcement that AJAX is the iPhone’s SDK of choice reinforced Laszlo Systems’ vision, having already built its OpenLaszlo RIA development platform to inherently support AJAX. This session will discuss how OpenLaszlo is architected to work with iPhone today, and will provide insight into how Laszlo gurus, Ben Shine and Bret Simister, created an animated news game from scratch in only 24 hours. Named one of the “8 coolest iPhone apps” by Wired Magazine, “NewsMatch” exemplifies the power of the OpenLaszlo platform and its cinematic user interface.

Speaker Bios: As chief interface architect of Laszlo Systems, Bret Simister leads the design of Laszlo's advanced user interface framework. He has extensive experience in designing and implementing groundbreaking user interfaces for personal computers and interactive television. Prior to Laszlo, Bret was the interface architect for Excite@Home's interactive TV service. Before that, he was a UI designer and project manager for Tele-TV, an interactive TV company, and a software engineer for Apple Computer working on a variety of projects, including video conferencing systems and corporate front-end systems. Bret holds a B.S. in Computer Science and Mathematics, and a B.S. in Physics from the University of California, Davis.

Ben Shine has been creating and using technology as tool for art, education, and play for fifteen years. With a start in computer graphics and virtual reality at Brown University, he moved into the Web 1.0 boutique tech/art integration world at Construct Internet Design, followed by a year building score reporting technology for the Sydney Olympics at Quokka Sports. Returning to academia at the Brown Department of Computer Science, Ben developed tablet computing software for organic chemistry education and an XML/OpenGL system to allow artists to create interactive virtual reality texts. At Laszlo Systems, Ben has contributed a rich text editor, a pure-javascript implementation of CSS for OpenLaszlo, an Ajax performance testing framework, and a disturbing amount of enthusiasm for all things shiny.

The iPhone: What We Know, What We Don't Know - Christopher Allen

Speaker Bio: Christopher Allen is an entrepreneur who has been a leader in the high-tech industry for over twenty years. He possesses the vision to see the future of computer technology; when he discovers new cutting-edge technologies he has the ability to form teams to take advantage of them. As a pioneer in e-commerce, Christopher helped to create an exciting and evolving market. This position in the forefront of the e-commerce industry was leveraged upon a solid knowledge of the security field and years of active leadership in the computer industry. Most recently, Christopher acted as Chief Technical Officer for Certicom Corp., where he led investigations into acquisitions and was responsible for the company's technical vision. Prior to Certicom Christopher founded and ran Consensus Development; there he orchestrated the merger of Consensus with Certicom, a deal worth 24 million dollars to Consensus investors that offered average annual returns in excess of 125%. Christopher has also founded two other companies, Associated Computer Consultants and Dreams of the Phoenix; each was a leader in its field. Christopher was a judge in the University of California 2001 Business Plan Competition.

Mobile AJAX, SVG, and the Future of the Web - Daniel Appelquist

This session covers some of the work being done with the W3C Mobile Web Initiative and other related groups. It also features a video demonstration of an SVGt 1.2 application that was recently launched in Germany. The session will finish with a discussion on WICD, a new W3C standard that sets combination rules for HTML, SVG, and AJAX.

Speaker Bio: Daniel K. Appelquist is a senior technology strategist at Vodafone Group, where he works on Web and Internet projects and industry activities. He helped to create dotMobi and the W3C Mobile Web Initiative, where he chairs the Mobile Web Best Practices working group. He is also the founder of Mobile Monday London, and has spoken at numerous conferences and events on the mobile Web, including Web 2.0 Summit, South by Southwest Interactive and the Future of Web Apps (London).
